Diagnostic Value of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytology in Breast Nodules


Abstract
Eighty patients with dominant breast nodules were clinically assessed with preoperative aspiration biopsy cytology(ABC) and postoperative histopathology from July, 1982 to September, 1983 at the department of surgery, Chonnam University Medical school.
The results of this study were as following:
1) Cell obtainability with FNABC is 90%.
2) Overall diagnostic accuracy of FNABC is 83.1%.
3) In breast carcinoma, accuracy of FNABC is 60%, sensitivity 64.3%, specipicity 88.2%, false positive 40%, false negative 10%.
4) In benign lesions, accuracy of FNABC is 90%, sensitivity 83.3%, specipicity 54.5%, false positive 10% and false negative 60%.
5) Incidence of breast carinoma in the breast nodule is 19.4%, cyst 1.4%.
6) No complication was found in this study.
